I’ve been actively coaching basketball to kids and adults for the past 6 months. It has been surprisingly fulfilling and a journey I’m glad I embarked on. Even though I live and breathe basketball it was daunting to think that I was now invested in the teaching and development of others. (Quiet shoutout to all the great coaches I’ve had in the past). As with anything, there were challenges along the way but none that ever exceeded the self discoveries along the journey.

The first stone unturned was a sense of fulfillment. Giving back to the next generation through the lessons I’ve learned along the years is a rewarding process. Some things took time to fully divulge, while others were implemented straight away. There was gratification witnessing the learning process take hold. Enjoyment comes from seeing others succeed.

The second discovery was sharing my lifelong learnings. I’ve found it difficult over the years as imposter syndrome quietly lurked at the back of my mind. Coming to the realisation that I’ve been coaching my whole life and to not be afraid to share my knowledge it became an important pillar in my teaching method. Sharing the lessons I’ve learned throughout my many experiences may speed up the process for others.

Coaching enabled me to enhance my communication skills as everyone has a different learning process. I was challenged through how I spoke to different individuals; adults, kids, beginners, and experienced players. Ensuring my message was received and implemented in the most efficient way possible.

When you teach you’re reinforcing the lessons you have learned prior or creating new pathways. Coaching has helped me understand the game of basketball at a deeper level,  doubling down on my beliefs. It also questioned some misconceptions I adopted over the years without fully understanding why. The last discovery was how fun being around the game is. Birds of a flock fly together, so when everyone brought energy and passion to the sessions positive energy flowed in abundance.

These are some of the self discoveries I’ve made about myself over the past 6 months. Humans are collaborative by nature and sharing one's experiences and knowledge is the best way to advance. Share yours also.
